After two weeks it is very pleasing to see how well our new students have settled into the routines of high school.
The assembly for the DUX, student leaders and captains last week was a good chance to acknowledge those students who are prepared to represent their peers at different levels and we appreciate the efforts they have already put in, either for swimming carnival or being prepared to make a speech in front of their peers. Congratulations to the following students on their election:
Student Leaders
School Captains: | Casey Cleggett and Max Crouch |
Deputy Captains: | Tanisha Wakefield and Isaac Willsmore |
Year 11: | Lara Zanker, Bella Zwar, Angus Gilby and George Klemm |
Year 10: |
Chloe Dickin and Jaxon Brand |
Year 9: | Asia Brand and Francis Venning |
Year 8 leaders will be elected during the Year 8 camp.
Madeline Hansen as our 2020 DUX provided an outstanding and motivating speech. We congratulate her on her wonderful achievements.
Despite the extreme weather we held a very successful swimming carnival with the enthusiasm of students nominating for events very positive. Congratulations to Sulliavan on their carnival win.
A reminder that next Monday is our Governing Council AGM at 7pm, we have 5 vacancies and are looking forward to some new members to join us.
Parents play a pivotal role in their child’s final year of school. As well as being your child’s cheerleader, you should also set reasonable expectations. Here are the top tips to help your child achieve their best:
- Establish a positive relationship with the school
Don’t be frightened to contact the school if you have a concern, and ask them to contact you if they have any issues. Working together is the best way to ensure your child will reach their full potential. Schools work hard to put things in place to support students and to help them reach their potential. Encourage your student to join any organised wellbeing activities and study sessions. They will make a huge difference.
- Expect some bumps in the road
Year 12 is a tricky journey and all students will have some issues along the way. Be there to listen when they need to vent and encourage them to keep going when things are not tracking well.
- Listen to your child
You know your child best so you might notice concerning changes before others. If you do, contact the school and ask for support. You are not expected to solve every issue on your own. The school will have some supports they can suggest to help your child get back on track. Mental health is the most important factor that will impact on student performance, so be sure to help them maintain a positive mindset.
- Help manage the things that you can control
As a parent you can’t control what will be in tests or what content will be covered in class, but you can help manage things such as screen time, nutrition, sleep patterns, work and sport commitments and wellbeing. Help them to maintain a balance between study commitments and down time.
- Try and remove some pressure
Students tend to place a lot of pressure on themselves so it is important to encourage and support without adding to this pressure. No two students are the same so be mindful not to compare your child with other students or expect all students to be working towards the same goals.

In our new and improved extended Pastoral Care so far this term we have…
YEAR 8 – We have focused on administration and organisation. We have spent some time on preparing for immunisations and camp.
YEAR 9 – We have been focusing on mindfulness, self-care, gratitude, self-reflection and preparing for the year. We have also had some great conversations about leadership and what makes a good leader.
YEAR 10 – The year 10s have been looking at general study and organisation skills; scheduling tasks and avoiding procrastination, homework and using a diary. A lot of time has been spent on organising the paperwork and consent forms necessary for the start of the year.
YEAR 11 – We have looked at one-on-one goal setting, weekly planning and scheduling. This week we are focusing on Growth vs Fixed mindset. For a bit of fun, we have Music Monday and Fun Friday!
YEAR 12 – We have spent some time preparing for the big year ahead. We have looked at some self-reflective writing and have had some discussion and activities on support networks.

As part of their Agricultural course, Year 8’s will be planting and tending to their own vegetable gardens for winter. To assist us in growing our seedlings, we are asking for donations of any unwanted plastic plant pots you may have around home that are no longer needed. Pots can be dropped off at the school Agriculture block.
Thanks in advance
Nicola Wright - Agriculture Teacher
We would love any donations of unwanted/old wool or thread and any size icecream containers with their lids to allow the students to get creative in their art studies this year.
Thanks in advance
Jackie McAllister - Visual Art Teacher
Hi everyone,
Well what a busy few weeks it has been! For me, finding my feet in a new job (and to be made feel so incredibly welcome), for newbies at the school, finding their feet in a new and exciting environment and welcoming Laura Primary School lunches through our canteen. I think we have all adapted to these new challenges very well. I am currently working on a new menu that I would have liked to have out this week but I am still making some last-minute tweaks. The main reason you are hearing from me today is to thank the school parents that have offered their assistance in the canteen, which has definitely been needed (especially on a Friday) so if you can offer your assistance for any day please pop in and see me or give the school a ring and have a chat with me. Your support does not necessarily have to be on site, you may be able to do some cooking at home, which I will provide you with the recipes and ingredients to do so. We are working very hard to make the canteen viable and exciting for the students so whatever you can do to help would be greatly appreciated and will directly support the students and school.
Cheers Susie xxx
My name is Amelia and I am a student Dietitian, my project partner Reaghan and I are 4th year Nutrition and Dietetics students on Community Placement in Port Pirie. The project we are working on is a needs assessment to discover the needs of Booleroo Centre, Laura, Gladstone and the surrounding communities in chronic disease prevention and management. We are looking to talk to community members about their opinions on the current health services available in their area and what they believe the gaps are. We will be doing trips to the towns over the next couple of weeks and setting up some survey stalls outside the town IGAs to meet some community members and get their opinions.
We would love if staff and/or parents could complete the survey which should take no more than ten minutes. The information we collect will be collated for a report which will help apply for federal funding through the Integrating Primary Health Care Service and identify how this funding can assist the community.
