On Monday, 4 July SAPOL, in conjunction with the emergency services suite and local emergency services staff, created a mock crash in Gladstone High School’s bus loop. This was attended by students in Years 10, 11 and 12 from Gladstone High School and Jamestown Community School.
The students witnessed a mock scene which provided a realistic experience for the students where the extended effects of road accidents were considered and worked through in a way that highlighted the number of people and services that are involved in a singular event. A speaker attended after the session and talked to the students about her lived experience of being involved in a devastating accident and the impact this accident has had on her both physically and psychologically.
During the mock scene, discussions and speeches a number of important topics were explored including the perils of road use, the contributors to unsafe driving and guidance on how to be a responsible road user. Students left the session with a clear understanding of the effects of car accidents on young road users.
