We are very excited to announce our new Canteen Manager Stacey Wilson. Stacey started this week after a handover from Phillipa Davidson. We would like to thank Phillipa for her commitment over the last year and really appreciate the fact she stepped in at very short notice and has provided a wonderful service to us and our local school community.
Whilst on the subject of the canteen please note there will be price rises to most items starting Monday 5th September. As you could all appreciate the costs of products have been increasing and up until now we have absorbed these costs, but it is time to increase our prices to ensure the canteen remains viable.
Thank you very much to all of the families who have already completed the Parent Survey. You have until Sunday 28th August to complete this. We do appreciate any feedback you are able to provide through this process.
The Ski Trip finally happened last week and from all accounts, students and staff had the most amazing time. Thank you so much Stephen Bosch and Deb Davis for all of their work and preparation for the camp. Thank you also to Ali Gulin, Luke Bartlett, Nathan Gillard and Max Rutjens for being prepared to go on the trip. It is a mammoth effort and very much appreciated. The Year 9’s who didn’t attend were able to enjoy some different opportunities during the week and I thank the staff who helped make this happen.
In the last two weeks, staff have been reviewing student progress as part of our traffic light system. This process is used to look at individual student progress and keep you informed if there are any concerns about how your child is progressing. We encourage you to sit down with your child and discuss any concerns that are raised and make further contact with teachers if necessary.

In Week 3, SACE Visual and Creative Art students went to Adelaide to immerse themselves in various visual art exhibitions and experiences in order to amplify their learning and provide them with material for assignments. Booleroo Centre District School was invited to join us this year, with four-year 12's attending alongside our students.
On the first day, we did a walking tour of street art, paying close attention to colour, composition and impact of each work. A visit to MOD. Exposed students to diverse ways of presenting exhibitions and promoting audience engagement with artworks and informative displays, especially through the use of technology and interactive components. We visited the SAMSTAG and SALA exhibitions too, including a trip to see work by University Senior College. We were lucky enough to hear from some year 12's about their current work and processes.
On Wednesday, we were given a guided tour at AGSA of the Archie 100 (Celebrating 100 years of the Archibald Portrait Prize) and completed a drawing workshop in the gallery itself. Later, we saw the Gallery's permanent collection of portraits on display to complement Archie 100 and considered how portraiture has changed over time. A second exhibition, Moving Portraits by Robert Wilson, featured large-scale screens with video portraits containing only slight movements or editing and was curated alongside works from the Permanent collection. Later, students experienced Wisdom of AI Light as part of Illuminate Adelaide - A contemporary installation artwork experience with light projections and sound art.
Finally, students visited the Botanic Garden's Museum of Economic Botany and a botanical-themed SALA exhibition and viewed fashion/costumes created by Flinders University Students.
The breadth of rich experiences gives students a lot of content to include in assignments and helps them to develop critical and creative thinking capability as part of SACE. Alongside technical skills and analytical skill growth, the students enjoyed their experiences and had a lot of fun.
Thank you to Stephen Bosch for driving students, and to Sarah Treasure (PCW) for joining us. Thank you also to Benjamin Forster (Teacher) and Lisa Forster (Volunteer) for bringing the Booleroo students and joining us on this camp.

The 10B English class are reading William Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew this term. As an introduction to Shakespeare, I thought some authenticity was called for, so William Shakespeare arrived at school and presented the 1st Induction live on the Gladstone High School Hall stage. Students are reading the play and answering questions on Acts (scenes) of the literature. They are currently completing a biography on William Shakespeare. They will then complete an assignment comparing the play Taming of the Shrew with the 1999 film 10 Things I hate about you, which is the modern adaption of the play.

On Saturday night 13th Aughust, 13 Year 9's and 4 staff headed off on the annual Ski-Trip. After a two-year break from the trip due to COVID, the bus was loaded with anticipation and excitement. After we said our goodbyes, we headed off to pick up our Jamestown travelers and make our long journey across state borders. We arrived at Mt Beauty around 1pm on Sunday, hit the shops, collected our Ski gear, and settled into our cabins.
5:30am came around very fast on Monday morning, but we all jumped out of bed excited to hit the slopes and see the snow. Our first sighting of snow appeared halfway up the mountain when the bus stopped to put the chains on the tyres. As we continued our climb up, the snow got thicker; it was such a beautiful sight. Once we hit the top of the mountain, it was all go, out of the bus, get your ski boots on, head to the chair lift and get to our ski lessons. The weather wasn't kind to us on that first morning, we had some rain, hail, snow and sleet. But that didn't stop the enthusiasm of the kids to get skiing. We split off into our lesson groups and had our first taste of what it is like to ski. After our lessons, we all meet back in “Cloud 9” for a warm drink and to make a plan for the rest of the day. We again split into groups and started to explore the different runs on the mountain. We continued to ski for the rest of the day until it was time to head back down the mountain. The trip home was very long as the bus had mechanical problems descending the mountain, but everyone showed great patience and enjoyed the rest.
Back at the park and we only had time to get changed and head to the tavern for tea. Then it was time to make lunches, shower and get ready to do it all again the next morning.
As the week went on we had a collection of weather events, beautiful soft snow fell on Tuesday and clear blue skies and sunshine on Wednesday. Thursday started off windy with low visibility, the wind dropped off as the day went on but the visibility stayed relatively low.
During the week we saw some wonderful traits from our students, resilience, friendship, kindness and caring. They learnt how to "slay" the slopes, crash and get straight back up and assist their peers and teachers when required.
After four days filled with skiing, fun and laughter it was time to pack up and make the long journey back into our state. Arriving back at school at 10 am on Friday morning, we loaded up and headed home for a very well-earnt rest.

In Year 8 Visual Art, students have been applying their learning of Colour Theory through painting large Mandalas. They needed to use an analogous colour scheme and tints, focus on repetition/pattern, and work with radial symmetry. They are very effective and beautiful to look at!
Jackie McAllister - Art Teacher
In Year 7 Art, students have been learning about Pop Art. The Pop Art movement focusses on making the everyday art, and making art accessible to the masses (not just elite society). Artists such as Andy Warhol did this by taking something in everybody's pantry and creating colourful works about it (Campbell's Soup Cans). We developed our understanding of his impactful compositions by creating our own series of Vegemite Jars using oil pastes and coloured paper.

On Thursday, August 11 all Year 7 and 8 classes participated in the MNSEC 5-a-side Soccer Carnival at Booleroo Centre District School. It was a sunny day but very windy and cold. We had 3 girl's teams and 3 boy's teams. All teams had success with wins, draws or both.
In the finals, two of the boy's teams played with one team making it to Grand Final to play against Orroroo Area School. Two of our girl's teams were also in the finals, with one playing in the Grand Final against Jamestown.
Just when we thought it couldn’t get any more exciting, both Grand Finals ended in draws – nill-all for the girls and one-all for the boys. So both went to penalty shootouts.
Girl's goalie Isabella Laird saved the first goal attempt by Jamestown, but Daisy Coe also had her shot stopped. Jamestown’s second attempt was also intercepted by Isabella…followed by an amazing goal by Ebonee Nitschke to take the win.
In the boy’s shoot-out, Gavin O'Brien was up first and wasted no time claiming GHS the goal. The world resting on his shoulders, Riley Hoskin expertly blocked Orroroo’s attempt, securing both Grand Final wins for GHS!
Well done to everyone who played throughout the day. Thank you to the Year 9 coaches Eliza, Aleesha, Antwan and Tobey for your help. Thank you to Mr Rutjens, Mr Gillard and Mr Watson for stepping in to coach the extra teams and Mr Martin and Leon for driving buses. We had a fun day and congratulations to the teams who were the overall winners.
